Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump has authorized the immediate delivery of 10 Patriot missile interceptors to Ukraine, reversing last week’s Pentagon pause and signaling a renewed U.S. commitment to Kyiv’s defense amid escalating Russian attacks.

The decision follows a tense phone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which the White House described as “disappointing.” Hours after the call, Russia launched its largest drone and missile barrage of the war, striking Kyiv and killing at least one civilian.

Speaking alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on July 7, Trump told reporters: “We’re going to send some more weapons — we have to. They have to be able to defend themselves. They’re getting hit very hard now.”

The Pentagon confirmed the move Monday night, stating that the weapons are “defensive in nature” and part of a broader effort to secure a ceasefire. The shipment includes Patriot interceptors, Hellfire missiles, and Howitzer rounds, though quantities remain limited due to ongoing stockpile reviews.

Trump’s pivot comes after a productive call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who described the conversation as “extremely fruitful.” Zelenskyy emphasized the urgent need for air defense and praised Trump’s willingness to help protect Ukrainian skies.

Meanwhile, European allies are stepping in. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz offered to purchase Patriot systems from the U.S. and transfer them to Ukraine. Trump countered by suggesting Germany donate one of its own batteries, with costs shared among NATO partners.
