Washington, D.C. — July 22, 2025 In a stunning escalation of rhetoric, President Donald Trump accused former President Barack Obama of committing “treason” during an impromptu Oval Office press briefing Tuesday afternoon. The remarks came as Trump deflected questions about the Justice Department’s renewed scrutiny of the Jeffrey Epstein case, which has sparked bipartisan calls for transparency.

“They tried to rig the election, and they got caught,” Trump declared, referring to the 2016 presidential race. “This was treason. This was every word you can think of. They tried to steal the election. They tried to obfuscate the election. They did things that nobody's ever even imagined, even in other countries”.

The accusations follow a controversial report released by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, alleging that Obama-era officials manipulated intelligence assessments to suggest Russian interference in the 2016 election was aimed at helping Trump. Gabbard has referred the matter to the Department of Justice for potential criminal investigation.

Obama’s office issued a rare and forceful rebuttal. “These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction,” said spokesperson Patrick Rodenbush. “Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes”.

Critics across the political spectrum have suggested Trump’s renewed focus on Obama and the Russia investigation is a strategic pivot away from mounting pressure over the Epstein files. The president recently reposted an AI-generated video depicting Obama’s fictional arrest, further fueling controversy.

As the political temperature rises, lawmakers are divided. Some Republicans have echoed Trump’s call for accountability, while Democrats have condemned the accusations as “dangerous lies” and “historical revisionism.”

Whether this latest volley will lead to formal investigations or fade as political theater remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Trump’s Oval Office tirade has reignited old battles—and added new fuel to an already combustible political summer.
